Our mission is to design and make quality outdoor clothing inspired by Minnesota's Boundary Waters and other wild places. We strive to build community by relying on local labor, paying livable wages and giving generously.
Our Reason for Being:
If necessity is the mother of invention, then it fostered Wintergreen from our company’s birth in the early ‘80s to its maturity today. For over three decades, we have designed, crafted, and tested clothing to meet the demands of our global adventures.
We design, cut, and sew our apparel in Ely, Minnesota’s “End of the Road” border town. The center of our universe is the Boundary Waters, northern Minnesota’s lakeland -- the most popular protected wilderness in the world. We live, work, and play there. Our durable apparel reflects the northland’s rugged beauty and the timelessness of our ancient forests.
Wintergreen Northern Wear is committed to relying entirely upon local talent to deliver exactly what we promise: quality, distinction, performance, and Made-in-America pride. Our Wintergreen team is now over two dozen people strong and includes the founding family: Sue, Paul, Bria, Peter, & Berit Schurke. We are committed to community and supporting each other. We thrive on synergy and an engaging workplace to collaboratively craft the best possible garments.
Wintergreen is committed to relying entirely upon local talent. For over thirty years, our garments have been made in our main street store by northland residents who are serious about quality. We handcraft each garment one at a time, paying close attention to every detail.

Our passion for our product reflects our passion for our adventurous and beautiful Northwoods region and the renowned border town of Ely that we call home.
Wintergreen (Gaultheria procumbens), is a hardy little boreal shrub that thrives year round, but especially in the winter – just like our garments!
